Cafe Del Mar Jazz


Cafe Del Marr Jazz maintains the reputation the Cafe Del Mar series has as a leader in chilled out, late evening, cocktails at sunset-type music. Here we have a jazzy twist on the theme. The vibe stays generally mellow but still throws in plenty of beat and percussion along with some gentle funk here and there, an occasional 50's feel, Enigma-type whisperings and quirky voiceovers - in other words plenty of variation and mood without straying too far from the dreamy feel-good laidback vibe Cafe del Mar is known. (Check out The Starseeds "Parallel LIfe" as a good example).

There are lots of moods represented here. Kraak and Smaak's Danse Macabre is a kind of Mobyesque take on jazz with repeated slightly disembodied vocals appearing amongst the instrumentation. The piano tinkles away on Montel La Rue's Adeus, followed by the lush Bossa Nova/orchestral rhythms of La Perla Noir's Inverno A Capri. Julien Sabre's Swimming Places completes the album and after a smouldering start erupts into a nice long piece of (almost) disco jazz. Fantastic.

Boogiepop Phantom


Most anime series' that have great sountracks, but listening to them you can easily notice that the music was designed to watch with the series, and lacks much of it's greatness without the visual aid. However the Boogiepop Phantom sountrack features songs that can be listened to by anyone (Even those who insist on not wanting anything to due with the series because of its goofy title). The songs may be lengthy but you'll be surprised how much creativity is in each song, compared to most anime music where if you see an eight minute song listed you think "Oh great, another song with a one minute intro and seven minutes of repetative techno." The only thing that might turn some poeple away is that the majority of the music is rather depressing which fits with the mood of the series. Overall I LOVE this album and it is consider it to be my favorite among my collection.

Nujabes is the Beast from the East. I know Beast probably wouldn't be the best word to describe this producer, but it's the only thing I can think of using besides "AZN SENSATION", and how whack is that?
Many people I know associate music made in Japan with the defecation widely known as J-Pop. I can't really make an accurate decision on how nice J-Pop is or not. I rarely listen to anything I can't understand in my favorite musical genre, Hip Hop, so there's no reason for me to check anything out in a genre I don't like in a language I CAN understand. Anyway, I first discovered the work of Nujabes on the cartoon "Samurai Champloo", like many Americans have. As a Hip Hop instrumental aficionado, I've listened to hundreds of producers and their products. From Pete Rock to Just Blaze to RjD2 to Prefuse 73 and so on... I'm a sucker for a sick sample. So it's safe to say that when I heard "Battlecry" (Samurai Champloo's introductory theme), I had to find out more about this Nujabes cat who made this beat.
