Millennium Mother

Mili never fails to disappoint with this latest album, building off some previous work while crafting fascinating new stories along the way.

My personal favorite songs would be Camelia and Summoning 101, but there honestly is not a song too dislike in this album. Each track has been beautifully composed in both its tune and lyrical flow as always. If you enjoyed songs like Ga1ahad and Scientific Witchery and Utopiosphere in previous albums, this album is a must-have.

[2012] FTL Soundtrack [Ben Prunty] ''FLAC''

FTL

Most soundtracks for games of this scale are just there to get rid of awkward silences. This, however, is one of the things that makes this game so dang great. At it's core, the game is simply a randomized, text based, decision driven adventure with some ship to ship battle strategy. But it's things like the way it was written and this soundtrack that make it incredible. This artist has managed to give feeling into things as simple as finding a stasis pod in a derelict ship. He managed not just to make some noise that fits with the situation, but to make music that actually describes it further, not through words or text, but through feeling. Most music writers call themselves artists, but few can create true art. This man is one of those few.

[2003] Shades of Blue [Madlib] ''FLAC''

Shades of Blue

Before you even start listening to this album there are a few things that should be bourne in mind.

1. Madlib is a renowned Hip hop producer.

2. Blue Note is a fantastic label for jazz.

3. The album was produced by Eli and Peanut Butter Wolf.

With these sort of credentials it is hardly surprising that a fantastic album has been produced. It combines some wonderful jazz (I don't pretend to be knowledgeable at all, though I have a few Miles Davis and Coltrane Albums, so I have dipped my toe in the water) with a hip hop flavour, which generally means a bit of lyrics in the background, with the melody of the song remaining intact. The beats are chilled, with some cool bass guitar, double bass, piano and trumpet playing around with the music in a way that only jazz musicians can.

I like albums which I see as progression for music in general, and this is definitely one of them, as is Bobbito Earthtones which I would also advise. This sort of music just gives you a good feeling, firstly because you found it but also because of the tempo of the music itself - just makes you wanna smirk and get down in a modern day James Brown stylee. That's right!

[2003] Untinted - Sources for Madlib's Shades of Blue [VA] 'FLAC''

Untinted - Sources for Madlib's Shades of Blue

This is a great introduction to jazz for those who may be brought into the form from Madlib's Shades of Blue. This is the exciting corner of jazz during the mid-late-60s, by some big names if not necessarily the BIG names that even non-jazz fans know. All of these tracks are great selections for this compilation, but Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew" stood out most to me. Maybe that's because I hadn't heard it before AND it is a great performance. The Andrew Hill tune, "Illusion", mentioned in the previous review, is also a standout. Heck, I could list every track as a standout, and Madlib did a good job on the sequencing because every song flows after the next in a sensible manner.

If you are new to jazz, this is a safe purchase for you to get a sampling of great music from different artists. If you are a sometimes listener, this will probably convince you to search more albums by the artists included. If you're a long time fan, you may still want this for the couple of songs you don't have, or to have the collection on one disc. It's that good.

The Family Secret

This CD is a hidden gem of modern jazz headed by a brilliant master of the six string bass guitar. This is very creative, non-derivative jazz-rock fusion. True fusion, not R&B/Brazilian inspired smooth happy jazz. Although Oteil's playing is very much influenced by drummers and the R&B/funk influence is there too, the music is another branch on the tree started by Miles and branched into Tony Williams Lifetime, Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

A lot of people tout Victor Wooten, but Oteil is right there with Victor, Marcus Miller, Alphonso Johnson and whoever else you can think of.

Genre : Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Funk, Pop Jazz, Jazz Rock, Soul, Funk, Smooth Jazz.

This CD is everything we love Rick Braun for. Smooth, clean, grooves; sensual lush melodies with a touch of funk. In my opinion, RB blows away any popular jazz trumpeter today, and if you love good horn, you can't go wrong with this CD.

Rick Braun has the beat. The infectious rhythm. The pizzazz. No doubt about it.

A couple of the cuts on this 1995 album appear on the1999 Best Of album such as Groovis and Cadillac Slim.

Never-the-less, this cd is a hreat addition to the Rick Braun section of your trumpet library.

Funky Stuff

This album is incredible, truly well-named -- funky stuff, indeed. Fat bass, good variety of guitar sounds, nice horns and organ, crisp drums ... it is an instant favorite!

Instruments and song writing is on point. Great cover of Kool and the Gang's "Funky Stuff"... and track 2 "Funky Motion" is absolute killer! The reissue ain't cheap though!
