Three CD's of superb tunes - some old favourites, a lot of classics and a few cheeky popuar tunes thrown in for good measure. This an album that doesn't try to take itself too seriously by claiming to be "the album of classics" -there are too many to get on one box set - but offers up everything it says on the tin -a collection of Renaissance Classics. A renaissance night is unique experience and this is classics according to the renaissance experience and i think its absolutely perfect. Just right. With tunes like Last Rhythm and Gat Decor - Passion, this is an album if you were a serious clubber, a halfway clubber or an occasional clubber. It fits for everyone. And for the person with the review that says its obviously computer mixed, do you seriously think that DJ's mix CD's for retails nowadays without using software? I don't think so.....

[1983] Junko Ohashi - Point Zero ''MP3 320 Kbps''

Junko Ohashi is another one of those veteran singers who never ended up appearing daily or weekly on countdown shows or in commercials but still garnered a loyal fan base with her music and powerful voice. So, it's a bit ironic that her two biggest hits "Silhouette Romance" and "Tasogare, My Love" have her singing relatively quietly.

This is a really funky piece of J-pop that boasts an 80's classic: Dancin'. That song alone makes this record, but there's more: In Your Lovin, Caught in a Shower and Sensual Night shows more of her capability as a funk soul lady. Who would know that Japan had one of the funkiest record makers out there? Junko kicks ass even today; her career has been mostly excelent all of these years so it's a bit unfair that almost no one knows her outside of Japan.

Almendra

Almendra must be, by all means, the first real rock album that ever saw the light in Argentina. This claim in no way intends to look down on previous releases by other bands: it responds to certain reasons I'm about to ramble about, the most important of all being the fact that it probably was the first explosion of creativity, the first audacious exploration of the Spanish tongue through rock music to take place in Argentina.

Luis Alberto Spinetta is naturally the soul of the album, supported gracefully by Edelmiro Molinari, Emilio Del Güercio (who also contributed with two of their own compositions: Color humano -later the name of Molinari's band - and Que el viento borró tus manos) and Rodolfo García. Spinetta's talent can be acknowledged from his early birth as a songwriter as a natural, innate one. Almendra is the sunrise of his unique poetry, perfect melodies and the beginning of this living legend of an artist. Bucolic pictures are combined with gray images of solitude, the innocence of a young daydreaming soul and the surrealistic eyes of a true poet. The cover art, another creation of the nineteen-year-old Spinetta, says it all: "el hombre de la tapa", which unifies the songs on the album in a conceptual manner (each song is related to either his eye, tear or toy arrow), though never depriving them of their identity, is itself an expression of melancholia.

The highlight of the album is definitely the opening track, Muchacha (Ojos de papel), one of the "songs from the sparkle of the one-thousand-year-old tear that the man from the cover cries". Balanced out by heavier and faster songs like Ana no duerme, but also accompanied by other laid-back jewels like Plegaria para un niño dormido, this is one of those love songs that are epic successes. It portrays the glory of a first love with a breeze of innocence and simplicity, never cheesy, never dull.

It's 1:30 AM. You're alone and it's hot, and ALL your sheets are firmly to the wind. Rain Dogs [and another drink] is all you need. Waits' style is a personal one, distinct and poetic, so trying to convince me he's got a best album is like trying to convice someone they like filet mignon more than grilled salmon! All his albums are great meals, so just because you're bound to prefer one to another doesn't mean your tastebuds are better than anyone else's -- the only way to know which you like best is to sample them for yourself. Because if you like Blues and standard arrangements, try Heartattack and Vine or Blue Valentine. If you like softer stuff or jazz hipsterism, try Heart of Saturday Night or Nighthawks. And if you like it more deviant, try Swordfish or Bone Machine. Waits's got something for everyone. And yet in answer to all the critics, if you want them all on one plate -- if you want pop and jazz, blues and acoustic, raveups and hoedowns, and lyrics you actually want to read like a book -- there's no way you can go wrong with Rain Dogs. I don't doubt this is the one album that would make ALL Waits fans' top 5. From there, you're on your own. Because like all great experiences in life, one person's worst might just be your best.

Where their debut had been a mixed and largely unstructured collection of leftfield soundscapes, followed by Millions Now Living's surprising love-letter to Krautrock, the third Tortoise release, the all instrumental TNT, was almost a lounge album - but lounge for thinkers. You certainly couldn't call this a rock album, any more than you could call it techno, acoustic, ambient or jazz, but Tortoise take all of those styles and more, building fabulously fat beds of bottom end, overlaid with gorgeous multi-layered guitars, vibes and sampled found sounds, and emerge with one of the last decade's most endlessly satisfying releases.

With it's frantic, sampled drum pattern, Jetty could almost be trip-hop, (in fact trip-hop is the lasting after-image of the album), Swung From The Gutters has a vague jazz structure to it, at the same time throwing in backward tape effects, I Set My Face To The Hillside combines - almost unbelievably - both Spaghetti Western and oriental themes and so it goes, constantly bewildering, constantly enchanting. And then there's the divine beauty of the title track... (sigh)

And it gets better with every listen.

Mere words cannot adequately describe how I treasure this record : wherein every song is a densely and intricately constructed whole unto itself and still the whole far transcends the sum of its coruscating parts. Best to describe my relationship with this record as a collection of associations and fragments: falling in love and a coffee buzz: Diagonals: angular grooves; driving at night: Contronatura: dark, effervescent pulses; holidaying in mountains at Easter: Brakhage and Parsec: shambolic cadences; above all, the company of loved friends.

Future Days, el último álbum de Can cantado por Damo Suzuki, es fácilmente el album mas ambiental y tranquilo que lanzaron en su existencia. Damo mantiene su voz casi al nivel auditivo de un susurro, en lugar de mantenerse en el frente como en los álbumes anteriores. Future Days es tambien el disco menos experimental de éste grupo alemán. En vez de inyectar el trabajo con extravagante y a veces nauseabundo vanguardismo, ellos eligen dejar el álbum en su minimo indispensable. Solo hay 4 canciones de Future Days y los vocales son contados.
El lado A contiene 3 de éstas canciones, incluyendo el hermoso track homónimo, el acechante Spray, y el corto y pegadizo Moonshake (Can en su salsa rítmica como en ningun otro momento). El lado B contiene una de las piezas mas ambientales del la historia del rock, Bel Air. Esta cancion multipartes de 20 minutos toca varios géneros, incluyendo ambient, que en el momento ni siquiera existía.
Éstas cuatro canciones ayudaron a crear el trabajo mas ambiental y balanceado de Can hasta la fecha. Desafortunadamente Damo Suzuki decidió dejar el grupo luego de éste album para convertirse en testigo de jehova (wtf?). Future Days es parte de la épica trilogía que lanzo Can entre 1970 y 1973, junto a Tago Mago y Ege Bamyasi y ninguno de ellos tiene desperdicio.
